Warnings and Information

Be aware of pickpockets in crowded areas areas, especially tube stations. Don't put your wallet in your back pocket. Don't wear ridiculously expensive jewellery to the shops.

Despite the recent cease-fire, caution must still be taken to prevent terrorism. Never leave your belongings unattended anywhere. They are liable to case a bomb scare and be destroyed.

Taxi touts are in operation at airports and train stations. These are illegal taxi drivers who prey on tourists by coming up to them, offering a taxi and to carry your bags. They will charge well over the going rate (people have been charged £100 for one mile). The only taxis which can pick you up from a street are London's famous Black Cabs. If you are offered a ride in what looks like a normal car, refuse, take your bags back, and turn away.

To anyone not used to travelling in London Black Cabs, their prices can seem like robbery too. It is always best to agree on the approximate price of a journey before getting in. For longer journeys it may be better to get a mini cab, which are licensed private cars. These can only be caught from a mini cab office, or by telephoning them. Again, agree a fare in advance.

Soho is now a reputable area, with some of London's best bars and restaurants, however it does still have some of it's old strip bars and pornography. If you are planning on investigating the area, beware the strip bars, most of which will greatly overcharge. There are stories of people having to pay £50 for a glass of orange juice. And there are people to make sure you pay!

When buying theatre tickets, beware ticket touts. They stand outside theatres selling tickets at far above the face value. Some even operate from shops to appear more respectable. Tickets for all but the largest musicals can generally be bought from the theatre on the day. Alternatively, visit the tourist information centre for details.
