Theory motivation for the Future Circular Collider

Abstract: I will give a personal perspective on the theory motivation for FCC. Important open questions will be reviewed with a historical context. I emphasise the need to renormalise the narrative in particle physics back to the same standards as every other scientific field: a lack of exotic new physics that breaks the standard theory should not be cause for demotivation or pessimism. Science is about improving our understanding of nature. There is still a tremendous amount of good science and exploration to be done in furthering our understanding of the elementary building blocks and fundamental forces of the universe, and a general-purpose particle observatory such as FCC is the ultimate tool for the job.
