Hi Julia! How are you doing? How is it to be back in Germany? How is
your flat and all your friends? We miss you here. It is going to be
rough because we are trying to be in that Hammersmith Regatta April 25 and
everyone is going to be gone at least part of the time for Easter Break.
Even harder is that you can only have fours in the regatta so we have to
learn how to row in fours. So Saturday we took out two fours. Remember
Luke, the guy from the Gilbert and Sullivan club who sat at our table at
the Colours Ball? Well Veronique got him to come cox us on Saturday. He
had some experience at St. George's but he hadn't done it in a while. So
it was him coxing and me at bow, Katie at 2, Veroniqe at 3, and Caroline
at stroke. First of all, the conditions were hideous. It was sunny and
not that cold, but the wind was REALLY REALLY hard against us, and also
the tide was coming in REALLY fast (we were going towards Richmond) plus
we were trying to row that four so of course our balance and everything
was shit and we just were not getting anywhere. Literally we would row
and row and row and not go one meter. Luke kept steering us in this
zigzag line because the wind was blowing us all over the place. In fact
at one point we were blown onto the shore and Katie and I had to jump out
of the bow to keep from going aground. So we were all miserable, Katie
and I were wet up to our thighs, and we were waiting for Ricardo to come
along and tell us we could turn around. Finally he did. So we turned
around, and now that we were going with the wind and with the current, we
were going so fast even before we started rowing. So we were rowing
along, trying to build up some speed and get some training in, Ricardo was
riding alongside in the launch, and all of a sudden he and Luke started
yelling "EASY OARS!! HOLD WATER!! BACK IT DOWN!!" I turned around
because I was at bow, and we were headed straight for this big metal buoy.
I mean straight for it, and we were going WAY too fast to stop or turn or
anything. And in the next second we hit it. And I just watched the tip
of the boat crumble and peel off. It was HORRIBLE. I was so scared, I
was sure we were about to sink, I was planning on swimming to the launch
and hauling myself in. Veronique and I were yelling at Ricardo "Are we
going to sink?? Are we going to sink?" But he told us we weren't, and we
didn't. We rowed to shore to assess the damage. About a meter of the
bow of the boat was just hanging on by a thread, and Ricardo just pulled
it the rest of the way off. The sound of the tearing boat was sickening.
So after we all stood there for a while going Oh my GOD, what are we going
to do, Katie and I got in the launch with Ricardo and she held onto the
boat while we towed it back. Luckily we weren't too far from the
boathouse, we were just on the other side of Kew Road Bridge. The other
four, which had stroke Julia, Sofia, Tim and Howie in it, was already back
and they were waiting for us on the shore. When they could see that we
were towing the boat they were surprised, but then when they could see
that it had a huge chunk missing they were shocked. It was just awful all
around. I mean we were laughing about it and everything, what else can
you do? I wish you had been there to see it, it was such a debacle. I
don't know what is going to happen about getting a new boat. Apparently
that one was a hospital boat and they only bought it about 2 months ago.
So, I will have to keep you posted. See, you are better off in Cologne
where you are safe!!!

I hope everything is going well for you and I hope you have a little time
to write back. You can send me email to this address until about May 15.
I'll let you know when I leave London. Until then take care -

Joanna

Dear Julia - Oh my goodness!! I am shocked to hear that you were so sick!
That is terrible! I hope that you will make a full recovery, soon. I
personally am not being in the race this weekend. It was sweet of you to
remember it and to write though. Yesterday was the nicest day for rowing
we have had all year. After two weeks of solid rain, wind, clouds, and
even snow and hail, the sun came out and it was absolutely HOT! I was
supposed to row with Vanessa, Anna, and Ricardo in a coxless for (with
Ricardo steering!) but Anna didn't show up. Luckily Vanessa happened to
come with her boyfriend Ed so he had a quick tank session and then hopped
in the boat for the first time in his life. He is really fit though so he
did pretty well, it was funny actually, with he and Ricardo doing
bodyswing only the boat was going twice as fast as with Vanessa and I
doing full slide! Well, I'm off to the library, yuck. Keep in touch and
see what you can do about staying out of the hospital!!!

 - Joanna

Hi Julia - How are you? I am doing well back at home. I spent a couple
weeks with my parents and then my dad drove me and all my things down to
Arkansas where I go to university. It took us 26 hours to drive from
Idaho to Arkansas. But now I am here, living in a really nice little
house with my boyfriend and his sister. We have a nice big yard (garden)
and two little parakeets and a little black cat At the momoent I am
working in a kennel to make some moeny, but it is a terrible job, I have
to clean up dog shit all day! Today is my last day there though, I have
found another job at this health food store working with relly friendly
people. I am not in school right now, not until the end of August. I
have to write my thesis this year too, and it is going to be so hard! I
also miss the rowing girls, everyone was so sweet to me all the time. I
was really anxious to come home, but now that I am here I am starting to
miss some things about London. Well, it was really good to hear from you,
and I hope you enjoy your weekend of rest! Take care - Joanna

Dear Julia - It was so great to hear from you. I haven't talked to any
of the rowing girls since I left London in May. At the time that I left I
was reallyready to come home and see all my family and friends, but now
that I have gotten settled in again I do miss London at times. I am still
working at a health foods store not far from my house, but in a few days
my boyfriend and I are leaving to take a trip to New York state and look
at a university where he wants to get his PhD. It is Cornell University
in Ithaca NY. Ithaca is supposed to be a really neat town and we are
really excited about our trip because neither of us has ever been to the
northeast US before. It is going to be a long drive though, about 2 days
just to get there from here. I wish we were going to see some rowing! I
bet all those rowing guys were hot - just think, they were even more fit
than the ULBC guys!! Were Steve and Matt there?? I definitely want to
hear what the scene is like in Cologne for the cahmpoinships! You know
what, your English is really so spectacular, Julia I really want to learn
another language but I am so intimidated and I get so embarrased when I
start to speak one like French and I know my accent is terrible and my
grammar is terrible... but you are really good!! You will have to give me
some tips to help me be confident enough to really get serious about it.
I'm still working for a living and actually I have to run to work right
now. Keep in touch though, it is great to hear from anyone from London.
Take care - Joanna

Hey Julia - It is always exciting to hear from one of my friends from
London. I'm so jealous that you were able to go to the championships in
Lucerne and Cologne. I remember what fun we used to have cheering from
hammersmith Bridge! And being surrounded by all those fit men in their
all-in-ones!! WOO HOO!! I have actually been reminiscing about rowing
quite a lot in the past day or two. I wrote an essay for this scholarship
that was based on my tale about the Head of the River Race. I was
thinking back to how scared and nervous I was, and I was describing how I
wanted to puke and how I just kept staring at your back and trying to do
exactly what you were doing... and how we passed three boats!! (Or was it
just two? Anyway, I said three...) I got all tense and excited just
writing about it.
My school is going well, I am working on my thesis and on
scholarship applications because all my classes are really easy. What are
you going to do when you graduate? Are you going to go to more school?
Do you know what your job/career is going to be? I am so lost. I think I
either want to do something very academic like teach at a university, or
something completely the opposite like learn how to make furniture or
something and be a carpenter. Really! I have no idea...
Do you have any plans to come back to the US ever? Oh, here is a
question for you - fo you hear a lot about Clinton over there? We hear
nothing else over here, literally, and I think it is just so disgusting
and emabarrassing. As if intelligent Americans needed another reason to
be embarrassed. I just thought you could offer a 'Continental' view of
this sordid affair.
Well, I have a lot to do and I'm sure you do too, so I'm going to
go. I hope you have a chance to write again soon!

Joanna

Hi Julia - How are you doing? Are you done with your exams now? Maybe
you are on holiday. We get a small break here in about a month for
Thanksgiving (at the end of November) and then about 3 1/2 weeks for
Chrsitmas (we have to call it Winter Break since not everyone celebrates
Christmas). So are you going to be finished with school at the end of
this term? How is your thesis coming along? I must say I have not made
much progress on mine. And have you been rowing a lot recently? Are you
going to row straight through the winter? I am not doing any sports since
I got back home, I am just being so lazy and getting FAT! It is shocking
really. This weekend I got out some old pictures and put them in frames
and hung them up on my wall and one of the ones hanging up now is the
shot of all of us out in front of the boat house holding the blades.
Everyone looks so cute! Ricardo is there too of course.
So how do you like the new government now that you have had time to get
used to the idea? I read in the paper that Kohl is not going to be kicked
out of his apartment since they are going to move the new government to
Berlin, is that right? Is that a big deal? The two parties that we
have in the United States are so really similar and so conservative that I
can;t even imagine having a socialist government. Do you think they will
be in power as long as the conservatives were or is this just a temporary
backlash against the conservatives? Are university students really
involved in or informed about politics in Cologne or elsewhere in Germany?
At my university, and most American universities, they are just oblivious
and concerned about getting drunk. It is gross.
Well, I didn;t mean to quiz you about German political life, but I felt so
silly last time when I asked you about Clinton and you pointed out that
Germany had more important things in their news. No doubt!! Anyway, I
don't really have any other news. My boyfriend went out of town this
weekend to go to Oktoberfest in his hometown, so I had the house to myself
and was able to clean it and do some homework, so I don't feel so far
behind. It made me feel better but it doesn't make for a very interesting
email!
Take care, especially on the boat!
Joanna

Hi Julia - I know you left for London today. How was your long weekend
over there? Did you see any of the girls from KCLBC? I sure wish I could
go to London for a long weekend! But I am about to have a break, for
THanksgiving. It's an American holiday, I'm sure you've heard of it,
basically everyone goes to their grandparents' house and eats a whole lot
of food. I am excited since I didn't get to celebrate it last year.
Thanksgiving in the South is the best. So I will get a little break next
week for that, and I am going to Georgia. I haven't seen my parents and
my brother since May so it will be so nice to meet them there.
I was talking to my boyfriend and telling him about you finishing
school in 6 years and saying that was fast for a German student. Why is
that? He said he thought that it was similar to Australia (don't get
insulted!) where you are not really expected to finish school and "act
like an adult" and get a "real" job until you are closer to thirty. As
opposed to the US and Britain where it is more like the mid-20s when you
are supposed to get responsible and start your career and get married and
everything. Do you think that is the case?
I can't wait to hear all about London and live vicariously through
your trip. I will tell you about my Thanksgiving when I get back. Good
luck getting your eight in the water - Joanna
