Of all the things the office machine has turned up since its inception, the history of the Bubble Chamber Football Tournament must be by far the strangest. To explain, then: it seems teams of physicists play football in some sort of big bubble chamber which is normally parked slapbang in the middle of Hyde Park on a Saturday afternoon. The men take on the women, with the former not allowed to touch the ball with the front and sides of their feet and banned fromm running. But how do they breathe for so long? And what happens if someone has a pin? The nation needs to know.
The Bubble Chamber Football Tournament was first started in 1975 by Keith Barnham of Imperial College and Gron Jones of Birmingham. It is an annual event held between the different UK Particle Physics groups that used to participate in bubble chamber experiments. The tournament is held on one Saturday in the summer and the venue rotates between the groups.
The groups involved come from Birmingham, Imperial College, Oxford, QMW, RAL and UCL . In addition there is a team of ex-Particle Physicists known as The Exiles .
The football is played according to a set of rules
During the day three competitions are played:
