WP1.3: Phase-I Proton Beam Target

• RAL contributions to designing and building T2K target is highly valued at J-PARC

• Phase-I target material for pion production:

• baseline choice was Tungsten (for both Phase-I and II)
• in April 2013, UK proposed using Graphite for Phase-I
• considering latest time-scale for Phase-I
• now accepted as new baseline material
• but, an engineering-led proposal; being analysed quantitatively in WPs1.1 & 3

• Design and build Phase-I target

• tight schedule—coordinating with KEK
• integration into solenoid needs care
• safely removable for Phase-II
