WP1.6: Radiation-Hard Insulation System
Composites for Pion-Capture Solenoid (estimated 35 MGy dose)
RAL Technology Department Materials Group
- Steve Robertson: industrial chemist (20+ years at RAL)
- Simon Canfer: Group Leader/composite materials specialist)
(18 years at RAL)
Choice of at least two materials (or a mix)
- TGPAP (triglycidyl para-aminophenol) Epoxy-based
- qualified in a fission environment (neutron+gamma)
- Cyanate Ester-based
- even more radiation hard than TGPGP epoxy
- catalyst package developed at RAL
Both systems appropriate for COMET (pending full characterisation)
- low viscosity, long pot lives and would be suitable for magnet applications
- not possible with off-the-shelf systems
